ABOUT THE CITY

With ECHA conferences we get a chance to visit our most beautiful and beloved cities that remind us of our common roots and satisfy our current scientific and professional interests. The city of Dubrovnik, “the Pearl of the Adriatic”, is a city in Dalmatia, the Croatian coastal region. A magnificent historical city founded in the 7th century traces its roots to the ancient times. It used to be an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. It was the only city-state on the entire Croatian coast from the 14th to the 19th century. Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, a seaport and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The name of the city is derived from dubrava, which means “oak grove” (dub means “oak” in Croatian). In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The city walls, which run almost 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) around the city, have been preserved to the present day. The walls of Dubrovnik have also been a popular filming site for the fictional city of King’s Landing in the HBO television series Game of Thrones, as well as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Robin Hood, and many other films. Being a popular tourist destination, Dubrovnik has a vast number of hotels. You can reach Dubrovnik by car, bus, ship, or plane. It is impossible to get to Dubrovnik by train; the closest you can get to is Ploče. For additional information about the city, please see the Dubrovnik Tourist Board website: www.tzdubrovnik.hr
